OUR 4TH OF JULY CAMPING TRIP TO HICKORY RUN STATE PARK
Reprinted from PA Chapter “A” Newsletter
Before we broke camp on Monday, July 4th, it was unanimously decided that each of us would write a paragraph or two for the newsletter. Following is a chronicle of happenings and thoughts as each one saw and believed to be true.
On Saturday, we packed ourselves into Joel’s truck and headed down a dirt road to the Boulder Field. “Joel drove so _ _ _ fast that we couldn’t see the bear,” said Gerry. Well, the Field of Boulders covered some 16 acres, and was between 6 to 12 feet deep. It was formed from an ice glacier (frost-heave) that happened about a mile away. This is a National Natural Landmark and is the best example of a boulder field in Eastern North America.
On Sunday, we rode to the Francis E. Walter Dam. This dam is fed by the Lehigh River. It is good bass and trout fishing. Water is released from the dam periodically. Many people enjoy rafting, canoeing, or kayaking the Lehigh River during a dam release. We then had lunch at Murphy’s Restaurant – a biker’s restaurant in the town of Blakeslee.

Back to the fire for mountain pies, and s’mores. After John and Gerry whooooped Joel and Penny in cribbage (such a good feeling), we learn a new game called Left Right Center. Ken, the party pooper, went to bed. Next morning, John cooked us an awesome breakfast of blueberry pancakes and sausage. More good memories for another good weekend. Thanks Joel and Penny (they even tented!)

Never thought I would see a Radio City Music Hall production at Hickory Run State Park! We camped at one end of the park where there were some very strange activities being conducted. The campsite was protected by a large tarp at one end and towels and sleeping bags around the remaining three sides. I did peek in one corner during my travels to the bathhouse and noticed a man/woman with long purple hair performing

some erotic dance. The group moved out Sunday morning and Gerry brought tickets for the Sunday matinee. She was not a happy camper! On Sunday morning we saw a mid-sized black bear across the road from our site. He had opened the cooler of a nearby camper and had helped himself to the peanut butter. A Ranger was called and he chased the thief into the woods. Weather was great and as usual, there was plenty of food and drink. (I refuse to discuss my game playing with Gerry). Great weekend.

After lunch at Murphy’s Loft, we went to Tannersville to the Peddler Village Antique Mall. Penny found 3 items to add to her mother’s dish set and we posed for pictures with Bessie, the cow. Then we headed back to White Haven with John in the lead to get delicious ice cream. Then Denise took the lead and we headed back to camp for an evening by the fire making mountain pies (mmmm-so good), then passing the evening by playing games till midnight - ”4” of us - the night sounds of Ken snoring in the background. “Good times.” Also, Ken played doctor to Deniese by removing a huge splinter out of her thumb! Thanks for coming to my aide.

Had a lousy time, no one liked me. Joel found all the geocaches, John scolded me for polluting the fire, Penny annoyed me with phone calls, Deniese said I was a pain in her thumb, and Gerry was irritating on two occasions, so I went home.
